Flu Prevention 101

Headaches, feverish chills, fatigue and nausea. Oh my! Flu season is rapidly approaching.
Don’t wait; get ahead of the flu season with easy preventive measures. Here are answers to some
commonly asked questions.

Q:    WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO AVOID GETTING THE FLU?

Without a doubt, your best preventive effort is getting a flu shot. Everyone older than 6 months should have a yearly flu shot. Even though the shots can’t guarantee a flu-free season, they offer your best chance of fending off the flu. Halifax Works Healthcare Express offers flu shots. Learn more at the bottom of this page.

Q:    WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF THE FLU?

You are most likely to contract the flu by coming into contact with an infected person or touching an infected surface, so avoid crowds as much as possible. One of the best ways to avoid infection is by washing your hands frequently with soap and water.

Q:    WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO EASE THE SYMPTOMS OF THE FLU?

Fever may lead to dehydration, so drink plenty of fluids like water or icy drinks. Fruit is also a good source of fluids, so eat your fill. Give yourself plenty of time to rest. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for aches and pains. Avoid aspirin (especially for children) unless prescribed by your doctor because of its link to Reye’s syndrome.

Flu can be a serious illness, so if you or a family member starts experiencing symptoms, do everyone a favor and stay home from work, school or other places where you might spread the infection to others.
