FREE CLINIC MARKS 10,000 PATIENT VISITS ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC – (May 15, 2007) – Eight years ago, a small but determined group of Halifax Regional officials and physicians decided to establish an organization to provide medical treatment to those who could not afford it. Today the organization, officially known as Roanoke Valley Medical Ministries Clinic and recognized as the Free Clinic, has provided healthcare services for more than 10,000 visits. The dollar value of those visits approaches $450,000. Recently, three of the leaders, Rose Fleming - the volunteer Executive Director, Robert Barbee - clinic manager and Val Short - Vice President of Halifax Regional and chairman of the RVMMC Board, observed the eighth anniversary of the clinic by having lunch with many of its volunteers. “We would not be here today without the dedication of the volunteers,” said Short. “Rose Fleming is one example of the community spirit that has made the Free Clinic a success.” Volunteers have donated nearly 30,000 hours in the eight years. The clinic provides basic medical care and prescriptions to adults that suffer from chronic illnesses who have no health insurance and can’t afford care. All services are free for those who meet the eligibility criteria. Kenneth Robert, MD is Medical Director. The clinic depends on donations and grants from Halifax Regional to continue its mission. “We are a community service,” said Fleming. “We’re here to help fulfill a critical need in our community, and we hope that members of the community will respond by making contributions to enable us to expand our program.” The clinic is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays by appointment.
