Intensive Care Unit

Halifax Regional’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides high quality patient-centered care in a safe healing environment. ICU staff members monitor and care for patients who have potentially life-threatening medical conditions and patients requiring technical and or mechanical life support. All ICU staff are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) with some having additional certifications in critical care.

The Intensive Care Unit is a 16 bed department that treats patients suffering from respiratory distress, neurological crisis, renal failure, sepsis, shock, coronary problems, and patients requiring advanced monitoring or who are recovering from general surgery.  The ICU strives to create an environment conducive to the patient’s recovery while considering the emotional needs of the family especially when dealing with end of life decisions.
