LithotripsyHalifax Regional provides Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) services to our patients in efforts to reduce the size of most kidney stones. SWL is offered on a weekly basis in a mobile lab that parks at the rear of the Medical Center. Prior to this outpatient procedure, X-rays or ultra-sound tests will be used to precisely locate the stones. Then, high-energy sound waves are directed at the stones to break them into small particles allowing them to pass through the urinary track much easier. The procedure will last for about an hour and is relatively painless. |
